How we research our guides
Last updated
Every guide on this site follows the same process, so you can judge how much weight to give it.
What we compare
For each kind of product we decide first what matters in a UK garden, then compare models on those points. For a greenhouse that means glazing, frame strength, how the panes are held in, ventilation, base options, warranty and how easy it is to get spare parts. For a heater it means output, running cost, thermostat accuracy and safety cut-outs.
Where the information comes from
- Manufacturers' specifications, assembly instructions and warranty terms.
- Retailers' product data, checked against the manufacturer where they differ.
- Owner reviews, read in bulk and weighted towards people who have had the product for more than one season, because that is when frames twist, seals fail and panes come loose.
- Published research and guidance from horticultural organisations, linked in each guide's sources.
We say so clearly when something has been tested by us in person. Where a guide is based on research rather than hands-on use, it says that too.
How products are chosen
Products are picked on merit first. Only after the shortlist is settled do we look for a way to link to them; if a good product has no affiliate scheme, it still goes in and gets a plain link. Retailers cannot pay for inclusion, see a guide before publication or ask for changes. See the affiliate disclosure.
Keeping guides up to date
Prices, models and availability change every season. Each guide shows the date it was last updated, and the main roundups are reviewed at least twice a year, before spring and before winter.
